How to Pause Location Sharing on Find My iPhone

A blog post by Cyber Search.

Understanding Location Sharing on Find My iPhone

Find My iPhone is an essential security feature for Apple device users that helps locate a lost or stolen iPhone, iPad, or MacBook. However, there are moments when you might want to pause location sharing for privacy reasons or when you want to go off the grid temporarily. Whether it’s to surprise someone without giving away your location or simply an act of digital detox, pausing location sharing can be done quickly and easily.

Steps to Temporarily Stop Sharing Your Location

To pause location sharing on your iPhone, you can either turn off the location services altogether or disable the ‘Share My Location’ feature. To turn off location services, go to 'Settings' > 'Privacy' > 'Location Services,' and toggle it off. Keep in mind that this will disable location services for all apps. Alternatively, you can keep location services on and just stop sharing your location via Find My app by going to 'Settings' > 'Your Name' > 'Find My' > 'Share My Location' and toggling it off. This will stop sharing your location with all individuals you have previously granted access to.

What Happens After You Pause Location Sharing?

Once you've paused your location sharing, your contacts will not be able to see your current location in their Find My Friends or Find My app. If they try to locate you, they will receive a notification stating that your location is not available. It's important to communicate with your friends and family if you decide to pause location sharing, especially if they are accustomed to checking on you for safety reasons.
