How to Change IP Address on iPhone

A blog post by Cyber Search.

Understanding IP Addresses on Your iPhone

An IP address is a unique identifier assigned to your device whenever it connects to the internet, much like a digital return address for your online activities. On your iPhone, the IP address can either be static (permanent) or dynamic (changing), depending on how your network is set up. Usually, your Wi-Fi router automatically assigns a dynamic IP address, while cellular networks assign IPs as you move between cell towers.

Changing Your IP Address via Wi-Fi

To change your IP address on an iPhone while connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can simply renew the lease for the Wi-Fi network. This process requests a new IP address from your router. Navigate to 'Settings' > 'Wi-Fi' and tap on the 'i' icon next to your connected network. Here, you can tap 'Renew Lease' to potentially get a new IP address. If you consistently need a different IP address, consider resetting your router or contacting your ISP for a static IP.

Switching Networks or Using Airplane Mode

Another straightforward method to change your IP address is by switching networks. Moving from Wi-Fi to cellular data or vice versa will give you a new IP address associated with the new network. You can also toggle Airplane Mode on and off to reconnect to the network, which may result in a new IP. To do this, swipe into the Control Center and tap the airplane icon. Wait a few seconds before tapping it again to deactivate Airplane Mode.

Employing a VPN for a New IP Address

If you need an IP address from a specific location or want to maintain privacy, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is the best choice. A VPN will mask your original IP and provide you with one from the VPN service, potentially from anywhere around the world. You can download a VPN app from the App Store, install it, and follow the instructions to connect to a server of your choice. Remember, not all VPN services are free, and some require a subscription.
